Summary

Anant Welankar has recently joined the Bombay police force as a sub-inspector. It is not a job of his own choosing. His father, himself a policeman, a ruthless and brutal man who has always been a terror in his own home, insisted that his son followed his footsteps. Nevertheless, Welankar enters his new profession with a certain idealism and a naive sense of social duty, which leave him wide open to the frustrations inherent in the system within which he must operate. When Welankar arrests three of Rama Shetty's men for attacking a constable, Shetty, the leader of the local Mafia, a gambler and a rising politician, merely rings up the powers that be, to get his three companions released. Welankar, whose sense of righteousness is his source of strength, is outraged by the event. Shetty becomes for him the archetype of all evil that he must confront as a policeman.
